What is HostMyApple?
HostMyApple is a Mac Virtual Private Server (VPS) service. We provide users with a Mac OS X hosted system it in our amazing datacenter. We offer multiple redundant high speed networks and reliable power systems. You can use your server in any way you want including: web hosting, file sharing, mail services, client management, iChat server, iCal server, etc.

How well does Mac OS X function as a server?
Mac OS X is very powerful capable of functioning as a server for a small to medium sized business. We love Apple because the hardware used to build their machines is of the highest quality allowing top notch performance in a small and reliable package.

Why a Mac VPS?
A Mac VPS allows you to run servers, develop in cloud with such applications as XCode on our high speed network and interconnect to a variety of telecommunications network service providers with minimum cost and complexity but with maximum security, reliability and redundancy delivering maximum “system uptime”.

How fast is the connection?
Each of our nodes are connected to a full duplex 100mbps connection. This is fast enough to power even the most demanding websites.

How reliable is the HostMyApple network?
Our network is powered by redundant Cisco 6500's to ensure low latency and fast transfer rates. The data center is located on the Grady Memorial power grid, the most reliable power grid in Georgia. In addition, our Data Center has dedicated diesel generator backup and Powerware UPS to assist in the event of a power failure. We are confident that our infrastructure is powerful and reliable.

Do I get my own IP address?
Yes, each Mac Mini hosted with us will have its own static IP address. You can add additional IP addresses when you sign up or at any time by contacting us.

How do I setup DNS?
Upon installation of your hardware we will send you the static IP address to access your server. In order to have your domain connect to your machines IP we recommend going through your domain registrar and pointing your A-Record to the IP address.
Most registrars will offer this service but if not we recommend DynDNS. They offer a variety of DNS services ranging from residential dynamic DNS service to full enterpise DNS management. Visit www.DynDNS.com for more info.

How do I control my Mac OS X VPS?
The are a number of tools available to allow you to control you Mac remotely. We recommend Apple Remote Desktop, VNC, or LogMeIn. Any one of these tools will allow you to control your Mac from anywhere as if you were sitting right in front of it. We highly recommend Chicken of the VNC .

What applications or services can I run on my OS X VPS?
You can run any application or service you wish! Examples of what you can run on your server includes, but is not limited to: Web server, FTP server, iChat server, Apple Mail server, Database services, a game server.... Anything you wish!

What if I need to reboot my OS X VPS?
If you need us to reboot your Mac Mini, just open a ticket and we can reboot it for you free of charge. Typically, we will have your machine rebooted within 10 minutes.

How do I backup the data from my OS X VPS?
We recommend backing up your data using any number of popular services such as DropBox or Backblaze

Can you reformat my OS X VPS Image?
Yes! We can reset your VPS image back to it's original state at any time. For more information please submit a ticket.

Can I run Apple's Disk Encryption on my OS X VPS?
While it is technically possible to enable disk encryption on our VPS's it yields no effect since our servers run 24 hours. This means that while your server is running your disk is effectively unencrypted. For the most part disk encryption is a valuable tool when used on a laptop or in areas where loss or theft is possible.
Our data center is highly secure with armed guards and dual keycard/biometric access required for entrance so the odds of a disk being physically stolen is extremely low.
